Code of Conduct

This community exists so people who do a difficult, often isolating job can find each other and argue productively about the craft. That requires people to feel safe being wrong in public.

Our pledge

We pledge to make participation in the FDE Community a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body size, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, caste, colour, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.

Expected behaviour

• Demonstrate empathy and kindness toward other people
• Be respectful of differing opinions, viewpoints, and experiences
• Give and gracefully accept constructive feedback
• Accept responsibility, apologise to those affected by our mistakes, and learn from them
• Focus on what is best for the community, not just for ourselves

Unacceptable behaviour

• Sexualised language or imagery, and sexual attention or advances of any kind
• Trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
• Public or private harassment
• Publishing others' private information without explicit permission
• Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting

Specific to this community

Forward deployed work involves customers, employers, and confidential environments. Three things follow, and they matter more here than in most technical communities:

Don't share customer-identifying information. Not in articles, not in talks, not in a chapter meetup, not in a Discord thread. Anonymise the account, the sector if it identifies them, and the individuals. If you're unsure whether a story is safe to tell, it's not.

Don't use community spaces to recruit aggressively. Job postings go on the board. Chapter events aren't lead generation, and treating them that way is the fastest way to kill a local chapter.

Don't weaponise the framework. It's a mirror for self-location, not a credential and not a bouncer. Telling someone they're "only an FDE I" as a put-down is a code of conduct issue, not a technical opinion. Disagreement with the framework is welcome and encouraged; using it against a person isn't.

Enforcement

Report to conduct@fdecommunity.org, or directly to Rohith Reddy Gopu if the report concerns a maintainer. All reports are reviewed promptly and confidentially. The reporter's identity isn't shared with the reported person without the reporter's consent.

Maintainers who don't follow or enforce this code in good faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other maintainers.

Consequences

1. Correction — a private written warning explaining why the behaviour was inappropriate, and what is expected instead.
2. Warning — consequences for continued behaviour, with a period of no interaction with those involved.
3. Temporary ban — from all community spaces for a specified period.
4. Permanent ban — from all public community interaction.

Scope

Applies in all community spaces — this repository, chapter events, online spaces, and any setting where an individual is representing the community publicly.
